About Smallwood

The game, the world, and the person making it

I'm parallaxzero. Smallwood is my first game, a solo adult parody VN set in an alternate Kansas where a meteor shower changed everything fifteen years ago. Below you'll find the world backstory, a bit about me, and answers to questions I get asked.

How Smallwood got here

In the alternate reality of Earth-69, the town of Smallwood, Kansas is a place defined by the day the sky fell. Fifteen years ago, a cataclysmic meteor shower rained down from a dying world, bringing with it both tragedy and strange new minerals that would forever alter the town's destiny.

The immediate aftermath was devastating. With its high school destroyed and infrastructure in ruins, the community was forced into a period of survival known as the "Lost Years." Formal education was replaced by makeshift classes in community buildings, leading to a fragmented and inconsistent upbringing for an entire generation of Smallwood's youth.

During this time, a mysterious health crisis emerged. A handful of children exposed to the meteors began to exhibit severe psychological episodes. The state government, fearing widespread panic, initiated a cover-up, publicly attributing the incidents to a newly identified "Meteor-Induced Neuro-Toxicity." To manage the crisis, the state partnered with LuthorCorp, a company initially drawn to Smallwood to analyse the unique mineral deposits for their agricultural potential. As a show of corporate goodwill, LuthorCorp funded a discreet medical annex to treat the affected youth, while secretly studying the so-called neuro-toxin for their own purposes. The true, super-powered nature of these incidents remained hidden, even within LuthorCorp itself.

Now, fifteen years later, Smallwood is rebuilt. A new high school stands as a symbol of recovery, funded by both state aid and LuthorCorp investment. The town's "Lost Generation," now all legal adults aged 18 and over, have been invited to attend under the "Fresh Start Program" to finally earn their diplomas.

It is into this strange high school that a young Clark Kent steps. Adopted on the day of the meteor shower by Jonathan and Martha Kent, he has grown up with a grounded sense of who he is, with almost no understanding of what he's becoming.

About parallaxzero

Who I am

I'm parallaxzero, or p0, a hobbyist developer based in the EU, self-taught across Python, Lua, and TypeScript over about four years. Smallwood is my first game, built in RenPy because the engine is Python-based, fits the narrative-driven style I was after, and gives me enough room to bring the feature set I have in mind to life without fighting the tools.

Background

Outside of this project, I've spent 15 years interested in tech, mostly PC hardware, audio engineering (acoustics, psychoacoustics), and video (display tech, codecs, HDR formats). I've released mods for Project Zomboid and The Walking Dead: Definitive Edition, with a combined subscriber count of over 850K on PZ alone. I'm a supporter of open-source software and have contributed to several GitHub repositories.

Why this game

I wanted to build something narrative-driven and creative with the skills I already had. I don't particularly enjoy reading books, so a visual novel, something more visual and interactive, felt like the right format. Smallwood is a passion project and I work on it in my spare time, around the rest of life. There's no fixed schedule.

On AI CG

I use AI-generated CG art throughout. I know that's a point of contention for some people, and that's a fair position to hold. My take: both traditional and AI CG can be done well or badly, and not every art style will be for everyone. I genuinely like the style I've developed, and I'll keep improving it. If it's not for you, that's okay.

No. Smallwood is an unofficial fan-made parody project with no affiliation to the Smallville TV series, Warner Bros., DC Comics, or any of their associated rights holders. It is a non-commercial fan work made purely out of passion for the source material.

This is a solo project. Using AI CG makes it possible to produce consistent, high-quality visuals without a dedicated art team. I curate and develop a consistent style throughout the game. If AI-generated art isn't for you, that's completely fair, but it's not something that will change for this project.
